This is a glossary of various terminology seen in varying levels of usage among hunters and shooters. Since slang and acronyms are always being invented, this list will never be truly complete.

  • Accurize, accurizing: To modify or alter a stock/factory firearm in order to improve it's accuracy potential.
  • Action: The physical mechanism in a firearm that loads, locks, and extracts the cartridge from the breech, before (loads, locks) and after (extracts) the actual firing takes place. They are classified by what type of mechanism is used (bolt-action, pump action, etc.). Muzzleloaders do not have actions because they are all loaded by hand. A muzzleloader's firing mechanism is called a Lock.
  • Ammunition, ammo: The complete assembly of a cartridge's projectile and propellant in a complete package.

  • Fudd - A slang-term used to describe people who, while claiming to support the NRA and gun-rights, believe that the Second Amendment only applies to hunting rifles and that tactical rifles, such as AR15s should be banned and controlled.
